Library Instruction Mission Statement
In keeping with the Wingate University and Ethel K. Smith Library mission statements, and as a subset of the Reference Department, the overarching goal of the Library Instruction curriculum is to foster lifelong learning and research skills in the university’s student body, faculty and staff, and community patrons.
Library Instruction Curriculum Goals and Objectives
Benchmarks for obtaining these learning and research skills are codified in the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education as the ability to:
- Determine the extent of information needed
- Access the needed information effectively and efficiently
- Evaluate information and its sources critically
- Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base
- Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
- Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally

To achieve these benchmarks, Library Instruction sessions highlight, define, and explain how to implement various research strategies, and engage a variety of mediums within the research process in order to deliver a basic information literacy skill set that is transferable across disciplines.
Topics covered may include:
- Library of Congress classification system
- Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)
- Physical location of stacks and all materials in the library
- Terms such as journal, periodical, peer-reviewed, etc.
- Holdings and access for online and print materials, InterLibrary Loan (ILL), etc.
- Resource evaluation techniques
- Citation format and plagiarism commentary
- Types of resources (primary, secondary, and tertiary)
- Sophisticated search strategies
- Open-access resources
- Reference tools (indices, subject encyclopedias, and concordances)
- Web 2.0 tools for organizing, presenting, and managing information
Library Instruction Services
- Library Instruction sessions conducted by a Librarian are available by appointment for:
- All classes taught at the Wingate and Ballantyne campuses; for EdD cohorts and other locations, please contact the instruction librarian to discuss special arrangements
- Groups such as Honors Students, faculty departments, fraternities/sororities, sports teams, and more
- Individual Wingate University students and faculty
- Local high school teachers and their classes (scheduling subject to availability -- please see below)
- Periodic workshops on specific databases and topics are also offered throughout the year. Dates and times will be announced on the library homepage, through signage at the library, and/or through the campus e-mail system.
- Freshman and transfer student library orientation tours conducted by a trained Library Student Assistant are offered at the beginning of each semester
Library Instruction General Policies & Procedures
- To book a Library Instruction session, please complete the appropriate instruction request form found at http://libguides.wingate.edu/instruction. If you have any further questions contact the Reference Department at campus extension 8097 and ask to speak to an Instruction Librarian.
- To see what dates/times may be available or have already been booked, please consult the “Availability” tab of the Reference Commons page in Virtual Event Management System.
- Instruction sessions must be scheduled at least one week in advance and be conducted at least three to four weeks prior to the assignment due date to allow time for Interlibrary Loan.
- A copy of the actual assignment must be provided to the Instruction Librarian at the time of booking so the session can be customized for that class
- Preliminary collaborative meetings between the faculty member and the instruction librarian are recommended to discuss the assignment parameters, information literacy goals for the session, and whether available Library resources exist to support the assignment
- Professors interested in bringing their students to the library for class research only (no Library Instruction) must reserve the Reference Area at least one week in advance to ensure space and equipment availability
- All classes, whether for Library Instruction or class research, must be accompanied by their professor
- Instruction Librarians reserve the right to cancel any scheduled classes for which the professor is not present.
- High school classes wishing to visit the Library must adhere to the University's academic calendar. As such, high school instruction sessions may be scheduled only during the following approved University breaks:
- Fall Break (Mid-October)
- Spring Break (Mid-March)
- Summer Intersession (Mid-May through early June)
