What is an Online Exhibit?

An online exhibition is an online showcase of media and text grouped in a thematic way.

Museums, libraries and other organizations create these exhibits to make their artifacts and holdings accessible to a wide audience. Some exhibits are intended to expand on currently presented physical exhibits, stir up interest in an exhibit, or to create a place where viewers can see artifacts too fragile or sensitive to openly display.

Online exhibitions are not restricted by an institution’s hours and are typically available 24/7.

Unlike physical exhibitions, online exhibitions are not restricted by time; they are not forced to open and close but may be available 24 hours a day.[1]

Another benefit of online exhibits is that minute details of artifacts or photos can be captured for viewing that would not normally be seen by a viewer’s naked eye in a physical setting.

The Anatomy of an Exhibit

Storytelling is one of humanities greatest tools. Thus the classic and arguably best way to engage a reader is to present informaiton in the form of a story. An exhibit should both inform but also draw in the viewer, try to make your exhibit possess the unexpected.

There are various ways you can organize an exhibit.
